In creating your artwork for the exhibition, what was your inspiration?
I knew I wanted to focus on The Original Series and portray what I felt were iconic images from the show. I also wanted to reinvent those ideas and designs, but still keep it respectful to the spirit and era. My thought process was always “What if Star Trek had been a comic book in the 60s instead of a TV show?” Budgets and practicalities aren’t a concern in comics; the only limitation is the artist’s imagination. Jack Kirby’s art was a huge inspiration here. His work and style lend themselves to Star Trek. They’re both brash and innocent and optimistic. I doubt there was a day of working on this piece I didn’t have something of Kirby’s in front of me for inspiration.
What excited you most about the opportunity to get involved in this Star Trek 50th anniversary art project?
The chance to reinterpret some of the imagery and designs, to pay homage and give thanks back to a show that gave me so much over the years. Pretty excited to see some of the other artists’ work too. At this point, I’ve no idea what to expect.
